Follow the diagonal
A played mark is used as the starter. The related marks are only its immediately adjacent diagonal neighbours on the fixed Cross-Stitch Diamond Chart. Marks directly above, below, or beside it are not selected.
The original explanation uses mark 31: its immediate diagonal neighbours are 22, 23, 14 and 12. Marks 9, 25, 7 and 35 are excluded because they are above, below, or beside 31 rather than immediately diagonal to it.
